One might look at this title and think I’m going to “go there”. No, this is a different kind of heavy weight that some of us carry around everyday; some of us have been carrying it around for years. Over the next three weeks, I’m going to share with you what God has revealed to me about releasing this weight that we were never intended to carry- let the journey begin:
There is an article of clothing I want to introduce you to. It’s called a weight jacket. Yeah, I wore this jacket around for years. I accessorized and color coordinated entire outfits around it. I adorned it up so well that others around me didn’t even notice I was wearing it. I loved that jacket so much, except on the days I would look in the mirror and notice it was weighing me down and making my shoulders hurt.
Ok, you know I didn’t really walk around with a weight jacket… or did I? Infact, I would go as far to say that some of you reading this have a weight jacket on right now. This weight jacket I’m talking about is the heartache and struggles of life that we have been carrying about for years. There are numerous reasons why we have this pain: divorce, abortion, bitterness, anger, rape, molestation, unconfessed sin, loss jobs, depression, dept, past sins, unforgiveness….the list goes on.
But it gets pretty tiring carrying around all that weight. Yeah, there might be moments when it seems to those around you that you have it all together. You stand up tall and erected. No one seems to know the better.
He knew there would come a day when we would fall under the pressure of all the weight. In Matt. 11:28-30 Jesus says, “Come to me, you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” Did you catch that? “My burden is light!” Are you feeling burdened today with things of the past? Maybe yesterday is your past at the moment.
Are you sporting around in a weight jacket? Are your shoulders getting tired from all the strain? Are you just trying to persevere your way through the pain thinking no one will notice? I love what Oswald Chambers wrote about perseverance:
“Perseverance is more than endurance. It is endurance combined with absolute assurance and certainty that what we are looking for is going to happen. Perseverance means more than just hanging on, which may be only exposing our fear of letting go and falling.” (ponder on this one for a moment)
Is there something you need let go of? Is Jesus’ invitation to come to Him with all your burdens and find rest sounding like an impossible dream because of your circumstances? We will continue this conversation next week.
Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. (Matt.7: 7)
