In the past few weeks, I have either received calls or spoke to ladies distraught over broken friendships. In almost every case, it was due to unresolved hurt feelings. Now, I could have sat here and wrote about what a true friend is and how to choose them wisely ( I already wrote something similar in Be a friend like no one else). Or… how to walk in forgiveness even if the other person won’t forgive you. Or….how the pain of rejection really does hurt.
Instead, I chose to repost a blog I had written sometime ago. It was my most viewed post. And I am guessing there is a reason for that. When we are in incredible pain and there seems to be no answer to why others are responding to us the way that they are, we need to turn to God. He alone can change hearts and heal the pain. When life seems out of control, God is still in control. We can choose to walk with a thankful heart. When we know and believe God is in control, life is just seems alittle easier.
Seek Him. Pray.
A Thankful Heart
Choosing to wake up everyday with a heart of thankfulness and gratitude is not always an easy thing to do, but that is what I decided to do years ago. I felt like my prayer life was turning into a bunch of whining, griping, and a whole lot of requests. I also noticed that nothing in my prayers indicated I was opening myself up to God’s direction and leading in my life.
Praying with a heart full of gratitude is not a natural thing to do. Everything in your human wiring screams – This is not fair! It’s even harder when we live in a society that tells us we can have everything our way and don’t bother waiting you can have it right now this instant. REALLY!
So what did I do? I decided I would change my habit of prayer. I wake up (most) mornings thankful that I got to wake up to a new day. I grab my prayer scripture book that is filled with affirmation of who God is, then the first words that come out of my mouth are words of praise, thanksgiving, and words of edification. I thank God for this new day that I am about to begin and that I would not miss nothing that He has for me.
Ok, as a mom, you know that is not easily accomplished everyday. But who said prayer time was designated to your knees beside your bed. The good news is that God hears us no matter where we are and no matter what we are doing.
This way of praying has made a big difference in my attitude towards things in my life. The small things don’t seem so monstrous, and the big things seem more manageable.
You see, when I was able to take the focus off my pain and struggle and place my attention instead on the attributes of God, which are never changing. It was at that point I was then able to relax in the fact that God is in control.
I love prayer. It works!
Now, it’s your turn. This was only written to show how I have chosen to seek to live with a thankful heart. I always tell my children there is always something in which to be thankful for. So, begin right now to lift up one word of thanksgiving to our Lord. I bet over time as you begin to cultivate this new habit in your life – a heart of thanksgiving taking over your life.
Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 1 Thes.16-17
