A Simple Rose

If I had to choose a flower that would best describe me, I would choose a rose, hands down. I have always had a deep infatuation with roses; this became even more profound as my relationship with Christ grew.
You see, for me, a rose represents growth, strength, and beauty. Everything I want for my own life.
Let me break it down this way:
A rose, like any other plant, needs to be nurtured. The soil that can become so hard and brittle needs to be cultivated and made ready for new life. There was a point in my life where I had a hard heart and I had to come to a place where I was ready for the “Gardner” to break forth new life in me and take my heart of stone and give me a new one ready for growth. (Ezekiel 36:26)
In order for a rose to sustain life it needs to be connected to the vine. I too at one point was trying to force so many things to take root my life. I wanted my life to resemble the Fruits of the Spirit, love, joy, peace, patience….(Gal. 5:22-23). As you can probably guess, I failed miserably time and time again. You see, I had the wrong focus. It wasn’t about me trying to produce all of these qualities in my life; it was about me staying connected to the only one who could produce this fruit in my life.  In John 15 it says, “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit, for without Me you can do nothing.
Ok, I can’t talk about roses without mentioning the pruning. Ouch! This is how Dictionary.com describes pruning: to remove (cleanse) anything considered superfluous or undesirable. Well, if you have ever been through a season of pruning, you know it is never fun, but it is necessary for growth.
I want roots that are firmly rooted and established in Christ. I want a life that bears the fruit for all to see. Just like my rose bush that displays its wonderful splendor, I want to display the life of Christ. I believe you want the same, too.
I think this verse in Jeremiah 17: 7-8 says it all:
Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, and whose hope is the Lord. For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters, which spreads out its roots by the river, and will not fear when heat comes; but its leaf will be green, and will not be anxious in the year of drought, nor will cease from yielding fruit.
